Powerful letters tell story of life in Nazi labor camps

Sala Garncarz was a teenager when she was dragged from her home to a Nazi labor camp in 1940. Over the next five years, she worked at seven camps before she was liberated in 1945.

She risked her life to save handwritten postcards, photographs and official documents that are now a traveling exhibition: “Letters to Sala: A Young Woman’s Life in Nazi Labor Camps.” They provide a firsthand account of Jewish life in occupied Poland and Nazi labor camps and show the sustaining power of words during extreme hardship.

See the exhibition at the Florida Holocaust Museum through Aug. 19.
