How did Honeymoon Island get its name?

by
seashore

Many of us have enjoyed the sand and surf at Honeymoon Island, but might not know how the white sandy beach got its name.

Honeymoon Island and nearby Caladesi Island used to be a single island called Hog Island. Then came the massive hurricane of 1921, which split the island into two.

During the 1930s, businessman Clinton Washburn purchased the island, which is north of Clearwater Beach. During a dinner with the editor of Life magazine, Washburn noted that the island would make a wonderful site for honeymooners. The editor used that in the Life story – and the name stuck.
