Devil crabs: A Tampa tradition

by
fried devil crabs

Immigrants to Ybor City made their mark on Tampa in many ways, but one of my favorites is the devil crab (jaibita in Spanish). It’s blue crab cooked in an en chilau sauce of onions, peppers, and hot sauce. The cooked crab is rolled in breadcrumbs and deep fried, so the devil crabs fit in the palm of your hand.

Two great places for them:

Seabreeze Devil Crabs, a trolley located at 2111 N. Blvd., features devil crabs made with fresh crab meat.

Brocato’s Sandwich Shop, 5021 E. Columbus Dr., has been serving up jaibitas since 1948. They ship nationwide.
