USF receives $1.2 million to expand program for students with intellectual disabilities

The University of South Florida received a $1.2 million donation from Andrew and Eileen Hafer to benefit students with intellectual disabilities.

The gift will help fund UMatter, a program within the USF College of Education that provides young people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to experience higher education and campus life.

The program teaches career training and social skills with the goal of helping participants live independently.

UMatter launched last year with a $900,000 grant awarded by the Florida Center for Students with Unique Abilities. The Hafers’ gift will allow it to expand to all three of USF ’s campuses.
