Florida Polytechnic University’s Phoenix Racing team is competing in an elite collegiate endurance race with its new solar-powered vehicle.

The Electrek Formula Sun Grand Prix begins July 3 at the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky, including a three-day challenge to determine which team can complete the most laps.

The team competed last year, finishing 7th at its debut competition. This year, more than a dozen students will compete, along with three faculty who together built the competing car from scratch.

Next year, the team plans to participate in the American Solar Challenge, a cross-country endurance rally.
