Tampa Bay area resident Johnnie Giffin donated $1 million to the University of South Florida to provide scholarships to students at the school’s St. Petersburg campus.

Giffin initially provided $26,000 last year to establish the USF Women in Leadership and Philanthropy scholarship. Giffin expanded funding to provide more scholarship opportunities in honor of his late mother, Fay Baynard, who died in 2017. Raised in poverty in Mississippi, Bayard found success in St. Pete as a realtor and earned her degree in 1988 from USF.

The scholarship is available to any full- or part-time undergraduate students, with preference given to single parents.
