Duke Energy Florida builds more resilient, sustainable substation

by The 100 Companies

Duke Energy Florida has opened its new Bayboro electrical substation to meet the power needs of downtown St. Petersburg. The electrical substation is the first in Florida constructed by Duke Energy.

The new facility can withstand 150 mile-per-hour winds and will more reliably serve St. Petersburg’s Innovation District with smaller maintenance costs.

The GIS substation also has a feature to capture potential spills and help prevent impacts to the surrounding area. The overall footprint is 35% smaller than the previous adjacent substation.
The substation supports critical infrastructure including USF St. Pete’s campus, Johns Hopkins and Bayfront hospitals, and Tropicana Field.
